Update for Paul and Christa Hegland’s Pictures

First, it was so much fun to be with all the relatives in Norway: getting to know everyone, enjoying the Norwegian hospitality and scenery, reveling in just about every serendipity there was.  Second, I’m looking forward to seeing the pictures others took, and the stories they share.

This is the photo I showed you, of Anna Thorsheim at about age 90, and yours truly at age 4-1/2.

Here’s the story, the picture was taken in December 1964, in the farmhouse of Serena and Jesse Hegland (my grandparents), just outside Radcliffe, Iowa. The brand new, shiny, black, rotary-dial phone had just been installed, and the old, large, wood, hand-crank, party-line phone was still active. So there we were, my great grandmother and I, talking to each other — the 90-year-old on the old phone, the 4-year-old on the new.

This Anna, by the way, was the Anna of Anna and Rasmus; she was the daughter of Anna and Ivar, who were the generation following Rasmus and Helena, whom we celebrated in Norway. This Anna was the one who died in 1967.
